Our Roots
Philadelphia Yoga Exchange was born of the idea that a group of people practicing yoga could be instrumental in the shaping of a neighborhood. PYX was created as a platform for cooperation, collaboration and community. While we are a modern yoga studio, our Asana classes are rooted in the lineage of Krishnamacharya. Our spiritual philosophies are inspired by the Buddha, Yogananda, Radhanath Swami, BKS Iyengar and Pattabhi Jois.
The yoga that we offer is a physical and spiritual practice that builds strength, flexibility and balance. It is accessible to people from all backgrounds, fitness levels and ages. Our teachers have studied endlessly to master the art of teaching great group classes to meet the needs of a variety of students. Students should expect to experience ease and effort in class, in a supportive environment taught by Philadelphia's finest teachers. |

Meet the PYX Founders

Lauren and Erik met as students of certified Ashtanga teacher David Garrigues in 2012. Their love is rooted in their shared discipline of yoga practice. When they moved to the Spring Arts/Callowhill neighborhood in 2015 they quickly felt inspired to teach yoga here. At the time the neighborhood was still developing. The concept of "The Rail Park" was just beginning, the first coffee shop had just opened as W/N W/N, and developers had not yet discovered this Philly gem. They knew something really special was about to happen here.
Having been a part of many yoga studios previously, Lauren & Erik were thoughtful about their steps with opening a new yoga program. Roots Philly Yoga Project opened on July 4th, 2015, later dropping "Project" and remaining Roots Philly Yoga. Early on, they recognized that joining together and programming collectively with others was the most fundamentally important aspect of an enduring yoga community. They always dreamed that the studio would be felt as belonging to the community at large, and not just to them. They recognized that yoga was a part of a larger integration of healing that includes other modalities such as Reiki, Ayurveda, Acupuncture and massage therapy. In January 2018 they had the opportunity to move to a larger space across Spring Garden Street which was the first stage in what would eventually become Philadelphia Yoga Exchange.
The "Exchange" in Philadelphia Yoga Exchange references the studio's proximity to the Rail Park, its location in Philly between North and South, and the intersection of which the yoga industry finds itself today.
